Christmas Tree & Displays |
OPENING NIGHT CELEBRATION Opening night occurs on the first Saturday in December. Thousands upon thousands attend the opening night festivities because they include the popular Electric Light Parade, a star-studded holiday concert, decorated Christmas trees and wreaths in the courtyard of Honolulu Hale and the traditional lighting of the huge City Christmas tree. LARGE OUTDOOR DISPLAYS The Honolulu City Lights Christmas celebration is unique because of the giant holiday characters situated throughout the grounds of Honolulu Hale. In addition to the 21-foot-tall Shaka Santa, who sits cooling his toes in the City Hall fountain, there are other larger-than-life figures like the Snow Family that provide countless photo settings for families celebrating the holidays. Honolulu City Lights has remained free to the public for over two decades due to the support of the City and County of Honolulu and the fund-raising efforts of the Friends of Honolulu City Lights. |
THE FRIENDS OF HONOLULU CITY LIGHTS The Friends, a 501c3 non-profit organization, is composed of volunteers, many of whom represent downtown businesses who join in light up as part of the celebration. Others are people who love the holiday program and want to help keep the event free for island families and visitors. HAWAIIAN CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS The 2008 Hawaiian Christmas ornament from Honolulu City Lights is the 9th in the series. Entitled “E Komo Mai” (Welcome, Come In), the ornament features Shaka Santa and Mele (Mrs. Claus) welcoming people into Honolulu Hale (The People’s House or City Hall) to see a display of Christmas trees, decorated by City employees. They are both giving the shaka sign and Mele has leis to offer their guests. There is mistletoe hanging from the arch of the massive door. Look closely and you will see that Santa and Mele’s dog is playing with some of the slippers left behind by those visiting the display. Look for the new 2008 Hawaiian Christmas ornaments at these locations by early October: at Macy’s stores on Oahu, all First Hawaiian Bank branches on Oahu, Borders Books-Ward Center and Borders Books-Waikele. Or you can purchase any of the nine ornaments on-line right here. All proceeds from the sale of the Honolulu City Lights ornaments go toward keeping the lights bright each year. SOUVENIER T-SHIRT The Friends also create a souvenir event t-shirt each year which can be purchased out front of Honolulu Hale (City Hall, 530 So. King St.) most nights during the month-long celebration. Should you wish to contact members of the Friends of Honolulu City Lights, please write to them at P.O. Box 8877, Honolulu, Hawaii 96830 or email us at Citylights.honolulu@gmail.com |
